Program Notes
A coenocyte is a large, multinucleate cell formed when nuclear division occurs without cytokinesis (the division of the cytoplasm). This phenomenon is found in certain algae, fungi, slime molds, and other organisms. Within a single cell, numerous nuclei share the same continuous cytoplasm. Since control is distributed among multiple nuclei rather than centralized, coenocytes raise intriguing questions about individuality and cooperation in living organisms.
In my piece "Coenocyte", two performers use sticks, glass tubes, marbles, and other objects to induce “cell division through sound” within the piano, conceived as a gigantic multinucleate cell.
