Differences in hobbies and culture, subtle nuances in language...the "distance" between "oneself" and "others"—at a time when I was interested in the human process of perceiving differences and the nature of communication, I came across the words of Satoshi Fukushima, the first deafblind university professor in human history. He lost his sight at the age of 9 and his hearing completely at the age of 18, but he established a means of communication that was close to conversation through a method called "finger braille," which is an application of a braille typewriter.
"When communication is cut off, it's a suffocating, thirsty state for the soul. (omitted) It is only through interacting with others that a person finds themselves as a 'light reflected' in the existence of others."
Deeply moved by the profound weight of these words, in this work, I incorporated the difference tone—the sound produced when one sound overlaps with another sound of a different frequency—as a crucial compositional factor, exploring the concept of communication through music. The "distance" between "oneself" and "others" manifests as a third sound (reflected light)—the difference tone—separate from the sound actually being played, as the piece progresses.
