<プログラムノート>

  This piece focuses on the mimic octopus, a species of octopus known for its extraordinary characteristics.
While octopuses are generally recognized as intelligent cephalopods, the mimic octopus stands out for its exceptional ability to imitate more than twenty different species.
Remarkably, the creatures it imitates are usually stronger than itself — a defensive strategy developed to ward off predators and ensure survival.
Unlike many other octopuses that rely on venom to subdue their prey, the mimic octopus has evolved its sophisticated mimicry skills in place of poison.

  The piece consists of two movements.

  The first movement focuses on the intelligent function of the octopus’s brain.
Each of its eight arms possesses a semi-independent neural system, coordinated by a central brain that integrates their activities.
At the beginning of the movement, seven players (regrettably not eight) each operate within their own system of scales and timbres, all controlled by a conductor maintaining a steady pulse.
Just as the octopus perceives the outer world through its arms and adapts to it through mimicry, each instrument gradually transforms its own timbre, imitating and merging with others.
Through this process, the initially dynamic sound texture slowly shifts toward a more static and horizontal musical landscape.

  The second movement focuses on the mimic octopus’s distinctive ability to imitate creatures stronger than itself as a means of protection.
At times, the mimic octopus transforms into forms that scarcely resemble an octopus — such as a flatfish or a crab.
Its eight arms (or “brains”) cooperate to reshape its body and subtly alter the pigmentation of its skin, allowing it to mimic a wide variety of organisms.
This movement translates that phenomenon into musical terms, evolving from a “rhythmically driven texture” to a “pointillistic texture,” and finally returning to a rhythmically organized sound world.
